dc.description.abstract This book is designed primarily as a refresher course for women whose literacy skills have fallen into disuse. It has also been used by women with minimal previous exposure to reading and writing. The book can be used flexibly in large or small groups or for individual learning. A trained teacher is not required. Rather each learner or learning group will need to find a literate volunteer, it could even be a student, who can assist them by introducing the new letters, punctuation marks and math operations. Learners proceed at their own pace. The book is designed to systematically introduce the elements of written English and provide a foundation for women to be able to participate in the self-study Women’s Empowerment Program. It is expected that subsequent materials in the curriculum will provide the necessary practice that new literates will need to become fully fluent readers. en_US
